Medical & Living Expenses FAQ
Q: How much does it cost to go through the adoption process? And how long does the complete process take?
A: There is no fee for any of our birth parent services. The admissions process is very short and easy. If you're interested in learning how you can start the process, call 1-800-GLADNEY and ask for the admissions department.

Q: I have heard many different stories about adoption in relation to the birth mother getting "paid" for placing an unborn child up for adoption. Can you tell me which stories are correct? Does the birth mother profit financially from adoption?
A: It is illegal to pay a birth mother for her unborn baby. However, the state of Texas does allow an agency to assist with some pregnancy related expenses during pregnancy.

Q: I am 30 years old and have two wonderful daughters already, however I am recently divorced and unable to financially care for my daughters as it is and am certain I would not be able to provide for the baby I am currently pregnant with. After placement of my baby would I receive any financial compensation from the adoptive parents to get me back on my feet. My ultimate goal is to be self-sufficient and be able to provide for my existing children, would adoption provide a way for me to achieve this?
A: You will not be given any type of financial compensation from the adoptive parents. Your case worker will help you during your pregnancy develop a plan for after the adoption to make sure you do reach your ultimate goal.

Q: Does the state help with the cost of the babies?
A: Gladney Center for Adoption is a non-profit agency and does not receive any state funded money.

Q: If I change my mind about giving my child away, will I be charged for staying in your Gladney home?
A: Because every case is unique, we assess on an individual basis. The Gladney Center does subsidize all adoptions and many people chose to make donations to the agency to cover expenses.

Q: I am a Mexican girl and I'm thinking about giving my baby up for adoption but I don't live in the U.S. Can I do it from here or if I go to the US for the birth, who is gonna pay for it?
A: Our agency can only assist birth mothers who deliver in the United States. Please call oru toll free number if you have additional questions regarding your situation, 1-800-GLADNEY.

Q: I had originally pursued a private adoption with a family friend, but they backed out. Now I’m stuck with mounting medical bills. If I go through Gladney, will someone help pay for the existing medical bills?
A: If you do not have private insurance and you do not qualify for Medicaid, we will reimburse you for medical expenses after placement. We always attempt to get you qualified for Medicaid first. Please call our admissions department for further information.

Q: Financial responsibility of birth parents.
A: There is no financial responsibility if a birth mother wants to live in our maternity home.

Q: I am told I won't really know how I feel about adoption until I hold and nurse my baby so if I change my mind do I need to pay back Gladney?
A: The Gladney Center is a non-profit agency. If you decide to parent your child, you are not legally obligated to reimburse us.

Q: I would like to have my own attorney separate from the adoptive parents. Who would have to pay for that?
A: Any additional attorney representation is your financial responsibility.

Q: Is there a fee to pay when you give your child up for adoption?
A: Absolutely not. There is no fee to place your child for adoption.

Q: I am pregnant and I have to give this baby up for adoption. Would this program be able to help me if I can't travel and have little income?
A: We can usually assist birth mothers in any situation. We would need more information to know exactly what we can assist you with. I encourage you to call us @ 1-800-GLADNEY so we can talk to you more.

Q: What is your center like and what does it take to get in to your center. Does it cost any money?
A: Our maternity home is for women planning adoption for their child. We are located in Fort Worth, Texas and can house up to 30 women. We are a drug free and smoke free dorm. We provide you with housing, food, counseling and education services. There is no fee to live on campus. However, there is a process and you do have to be approved prior to moving in. The process is for us to mail you a background to complete and send back with a pregnancy verification. You will also have to have a TB test and those results showing negative prior to moving in. We would be happy to help you, just give us a call @ 1-800-GLADNEY.

Q: After the adoption process do you help me to get on my feet; and if yes, how do you go about doing this?
A: Every situation is different and we do assess each case independently. Depending on the situation, licensing will allow us to provide assistance on a limited basis for maternity related expenses. Our caseworkers work with you to develop a discharge plan for post-placement that is safe and works best for your situation.

Q: How much financial assistance will I get if I put my baby up for adoption?
A: State law allows us to pay for a certain amount of maternity related expenses based on need. After being in our program, you will discuss your needs with your caseworker.
